Why Conservation Matters — and Its Role in Dive Training

In a recent Q&A session, Dive NInja’s Course Director, Walter Schmit, was asked for his thoughts on the importance of including conservation & sustainability in professional diver training, such as the PADI Instructor Development Course or PADI Divemaster course. Here’s a little excerpt from the session.

Q: What are your thoughts on including conservation elements in professional diving courses such as the PADI Instructor program?

Walter: For me, conservation isn’t just a side topic; it’s the very foundation of everything we do as divers. We don’t just visit the ocean or explore caves; we become part of these environments every time we dive. This means we bear a responsibility to protect and preserve these ecosystems for the future.

I’ve spent most of my life underwater, observing the vibrant life and intricate balance of marine and freshwater habitats. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when ecosystems are respected and carefully managed, and I’ve also seen the profound impacts of neglect and careless behavior. For example, I’ve witnessed bull sharks returning to local reefs thanks to improved protection efforts, and I’ve seen whale sharks attempting to navigate migration routes that are packed with boats chasing them. I’ve also seen the silent collapse of cave systems caused by bad habits, pollution, or simply a lack of awareness about their fragility — all illustrating how interconnected these environments truly are.

Because of these experiences, I firmly believe that conservation must be a core component of professional diver training. As instructors and Divemasters, we serve as role models. Students look up to us, imitate what they observe, and absorb the values we demonstrate—sometimes more than what we explicitly teach. If we don’t lead by example and instill a sense of care and responsibility, we risk creating more divers who lack the knowledge or the motivation to act sustainably.

In my courses, I emphasize all the PADI conservation specialties, along with an additional focus on specific species, such as bull sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, and turtles. Currently, I’m developing a dedicated conservation awareness course specifically for caves. These delicate ecosystems are often overlooked in broader conservation efforts, yet caves are vital habitats, culturally significant, and closely connected to freshwater sources that sustain both wildlife and human communities.

Ultimately, if you genuinely love diving and exploring the ocean or caves, protecting these amazing places should be a fundamental priority. It’s a simple but powerful truth: our passion depends on the health of these ecosystems, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they thrive for generations to come.
